single 1967: ‘A WHITER SHADE OF PALE’ (Procol Harum)

El 12 de mayo de 1967 se publicó en el Reino Unido 'A whiter shade of pale', el tema debut del grupo británico Procol Harum. El single alcanzó el día 8 de junio el nº1 de las listas inglesas y permaneció allí seis semanas. Sin recibir apenas promoción, alcanzó también el Top5 en EEUU y es uno de los pocos discos sencillos que han vendido más de diez millones de copias.

LP 1967: ‘ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?’ (Jimi Hendrix Experience)

El 12 de mayo de 1967 se publicó en el Reino Unido 'Are You Experienced?', el álbum debut de Jimi Hendrix, uno de los estrenos más impactantes de la historia del rock y un trabajo definitivo del rock psicodélico. Alcanzó el nº2 en las listas, detrás del 'Sgt. Pepper' de los Beatles. Unas semanas antes habían publicado los singles 'Hey Joe', 'Purple haze' y 'The wind cries Mary', temas que no se incluyeron en el álbum (según la costumbre inglesa) y sí formaron parte de la edición americana parecida en agosto tras su impactante actuación en el Festival Pop de Monterey. Una edición posterior de MCA en 1993 reunió los temas de ambas versiones, que además de las citadas contenía joyas como 'Foxy lady', 'Manic depression', 'Red house' o 'Third stone from the sun'. No debe olvidarse la potente base rítmica con influencias jazz que ofrecieron Noel Redding al bajo y Mitch Mitchell a la batería. En definitiva, un álbum cuya consistencia y calidad, Hendrix -a pesar de seguir grabando excelentes trabajos en su corta carrera- no logró superar. El año 2005 se seleccionó el álbum para ser preservado en el Registro Nacional de Grabaciones de la Biblioteca del Congreso de Estados Unidos.
